J.F.’s ability to paint in many styles allows him the opportunity to paint a wide range of subject matter with western at the forefront. Regardless of the subject in each work there is a certain continuity that says “It’s a J.F. Policky”.

In viewing the paintings created by J.F. Policky, you get the feeling that the artist surely must have been there himself.  Self-taught, J.F. began selling his works of art in his pre-teens. Today, his original works, in both oil paintings and bronze sculptures, are collected around the world.

A painter of horses, usually in high action in landscape, J.F. Policky has much familiarity with his subject matter, having grown up in the Nebraska Sand-hills in a small town named Broadwater.   His parents had a ranch, where he and his seven brothers and sisters spent much time, afforded J.F. with an “out the back door” taste and feel of western life. J.F. is truly a product of his environment. It was an era when town businesses still had tie rails for horses.  Laughingly he said: “It wasn’t uncommon to see horses tied up behind the bar until 3 in the morning.”  Policky also was a rodeo-circuit rider for five years.

However, he is more interested in horses as painting subjects than in reality because he is weary of being around them, associating them with chores as though they were maintenance objects such as mops and brooms.  He says: “I don’t particularly care for horses.  I’ve done everything there is to do with a horse.  I’ve spent one-third of my life on horseback.”  But he does enjoy the variances in their personalities, which he tries to capture in his paintings.  He also asserts that he doesn’t much enjoy painting because it is such hard work, but something compels him to keep at it and that he works until he can do no more.

Usually the painting of the landscape is the last part of his process as it is a frame for the horses.  Some critics have called his work photo-real, but he denies that, saying he paints illusion of detail and not detail.
